Author Interview with JACK KING

It’s the middle of November, so I figured what the heck, let’s have another Double Author Monday!

Born in Tennessee to a military family, Jack King crisscrossed the country multiple times growing up. After obtaining graduate degrees in business and history, he began a successful career in sales and marketing working for Fortune 500, mid-sized, and start-up firms along the way. Mr. King is the author of two historical adventure series; one for 18+ readers, and one for middle school & young adults.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I was in my early 30’s, a lifetime ago. Didn’t start writing until my late 50’s.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

My own imagination. Each book is meticulously researched, though, to be as accurate and impactful as possible on historical and factual details.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I’m a night owl. Once I start outlining, or writing, as the case may be, I go kamikaze, oblivious to sleep, nourishment, time passing.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

For my Crime Thriller series, I outline each chapter in depth as if it is a short story. I finish the chapter outline for the entire book before I start writing content. Sometimes doing the outline takes as long as writing the book!

How do books get published?

My Crime Thriller series is produced by Postmodern Publishing, a new royalty publisher who only has one author on their roster right now. Me.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

57 but wasn’t published until I was 61. That was ten years ago.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I’m a fitness fanatic. I live in the gym. Also read a lot, play with my dogs (family of dachshunds), spend time with the wifey.

What does your family think of your writing?

Surprisingly, I’m surrounded by non-(fiction) readers. No one in the family really reads my books! My youngest daughter and wife did read my very first novel out of a sense of “obligation”. It’s a YA Time Travel Fantasy (Historical Fiction).

How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

Five novels to date. Two books in a YA Time Travel Fantasy series. One Historical Fiction Two books in my Crime Thriller series. The 3rd book in that series, FALSE BLOOD, will be released before year-end. My favorite is always my latest book, as I never reread my novels once they are published!

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

From Galaxy Quest: “Never Give Up! Never Surrender!” Follow your instincts and passions. The stories you have inside you no one else can tell the same way. Make each book better than the last in richness of plot, cleanness of writing, entertainment value, and uniqueness.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Mainly, they like the fast pacing, the punch-in-the-gut style of writing, the plot development, and the weaving of multiple suspects into a tightly bound stick of dynamite at the end.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Giving up. Not having professionals assist with editing/proofing, plot development/critiquing, interior layout. Not evolving and growing as a writer. Not having creativity in marketing to match the creativity of their work.
